Hollins University

Charles Lewis Cocke, a youthful arithmetic teacher from Richmond, was the power behind Virginia's and one of the country's first ladies' universities.

Cocke lived in a time when ladies' instruction was viewed as useless business — even risky. However, at 19 years of age he composed that he wished to commit himself to the "advanced education of ladies in the South."

Inside six years, he satisfied that fantasy when he was delegated the chief of an organization that would soon get to be Hollins College.
